Bedford Courts is proud to have the opportunity to restore this long underutilized asset to its rightful place as the "Crown Jewel" of Crown Heights. We strongly believe the re-development of the Bedford Union Armory will benefit Brooklyn and the City of New York, but most importantly it will create remarkable opportunities for its immediate neighbors and the greater Crown Heights Community. Here are a few of these opportunities.

Recreational and
Community Facility

An anchor of the Bedford Union Armory project is the transformation of the 57,000 SF Drill Hall into a modern and fully equipped recreational facility! The recreational facility will include: an indoor pool, three-hardwood basketball courts and three multi-sport courts that will accommodate everything from water sports to soccer and lacrosse.

As this community has lacked sufficient recreational and community facilities, we are seeking organizations in need of space to offer an array of programs that honor the needs of the neighborhood. From after-school programs and sports, to dance and literacy programs, we want to hear about programs that are as dynamic as the community.

Our partner CAMBA will engage program providers that will provide a robust roster of space appropriate programs that meet the needs of local youth, the aging and everyone in between. Discounted rental rates and access will be provided to the local community.

If you or an organization you are familiar with are interested in serving Crown Heights and the surrounding areas by providing enrichment programs, we want to hear from you! We are seeking a variety of program partners to serve the community.

CAMBA also offers a broad range of their own programs covering topics from economic development, health, housing, education and youth development. As needed, CAMBA will be able to bring some of its programs to the Armory.

Minority Women Business Enterprises (M/WBE) Contracting Opportunities

Bedford Courts is committed to the Crown Heights Community and supporting the development and growth of M/WBEs. The development team has committed to the goal of 25% MWBE participation for this project. Further, the team has hired By The Numbers Consulting (BTN) to focus solely on work with the City, local officials, community organizations and trade associations to meet M/WBE goals, and share information about job opportunities. Special, targeted outreach focused on the Crown Heights Community is underway to ensure local entrepeneurs and workers benefit from the growth in their community. The Construction BlueBook will compliment our work on the ground in community.

Certified M/WBEs:
Companies currently certified with the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and New York State's Empire Development Corporation (ESDC) are encouraged to sign up to receive information about upcoming events and bid notifications. If you are New York State certified but are NOT certified with New York City we will make sure you work with a certification specialist as SBS to fast track your NYC application.

Non-certified M/WBEs:
As entrepeneurs and developers, we understand the importance of access to opportunities. In keeping with our commitment to M/WBEs and the Crown Heights Community, we have committed to helping local companies become certified. We have engaged the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) as a partner to host workshops to facilitate M/WBE certification. Workshops will be staffed by SBS certification counselors who will assist entrepeneurs with applications and guide them through the process.

Development of the Bedford Union Armory site will bring approximately 330 rental apartments to Crown Heights. Half of these homes will be much needed affordable housing units. The development will offer a range of unit types and affordability levels that will meet the needs of low to moderate income residents as proposed in Mayor de Blasio's Housing New York Plan.

Bedford Courts will host a series of workshops to help residents prepare for these housing opportunities. These workshops will explain how affordable housing developments work, how to apply for an apartments and what you can do now to prepare.

Community Facility and Commercial Office Space

The project will contain approximately 30,000 square feet of commercial and community event space that will transform the Armory into an active community resource. Approximately half of this space will be offered at discounted rates to not-for-profit and small business owners. In response to community feedback, we have included a flexible community event space able to accommodate up to 500 people. The space will be versatile enough to serve as a banquet hall, movie house, meeting/conference room, performance space, in addition to accommodating an art exhibit or rehearsal space.

Job Opportunities

As a major part of our commitment to the development of the Bedford Union Armory as well as the local community, we will ensure local residents can have access to job opportunities. In addition to co-hosting a series of job fairs with elected officials, community groups and government to share information, we will use City employment programs HireNYC and Workforce1 to hire. Through our partnerships we will also offer workforce training to qualified candidates.

This project is enrolled in New York City Economic Development Corporation's (NYCEDC) workforce development program, HireNYC, which connects businesses to the City's workforce development services. By doing this, HireNYC connects local individuals that face barriers to employment, to the job opportunities your business creates. This initiative was created by the New York City's Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to connect the workforce with real estate developers and other businesses working on EDC projects.
